People have been lured to these peaks for centuries, from the aboriginals to the prospectors in search of coal and fortunes. For outdoor enthusiasts, hiking around the Fernie area offers spectacular mountain views.

Fernie Alpine Resort offers their summer visitors access to the trails and roads. For those who would rather enjoy the scenery, the chair lifts are open for an easy ride up. Even though there seems to be no end to the extensive trail systems, it's virtually impossible to get lost. And the Bear's Den, at mid-mountain, is open for food and refreshments.

Mt. Fernie Provincial Park is only a short and easy hike from the campsite area.More experienced hikers will enjoy the hikes on Mt. Fernie, Mt. Bizzaro, Mt. Proctor, Mt. Hosmer, Mt.Trinity or Fernie's landmark the Three Sisters mountain. These are longer, more challenging hikes that require good physical condition, and offer great opportunities to see wildlife and more spectacular views.

Wear comfortable and good quality footwear.

Dress for variable mountain weather conditions

Carry plenty of drinking water and an appropriate amount of food.

Respect the wildlife and be bear aware

It may be wise to leave your dog behind rather than risk a confrontation with wildlife.

Mark your route as you go, or take a pencil and paper and note directions. Many trails overlap and merge, and it can be confusing.

Tell somebody your itinerary. Leave this information with front desk staff at your hotel, or leave a note inside your vehicle.
