Held in late winter, this carnival honors ‘the Griz’, the legendary man who prompts the falling of the glorious powder snow Fernie is famous for. As the story goes, the Griz was born in 1879 in a grizzly bear cave. When he reached manhood, the Griz shot his musket into the sky, causing the snow to fall. The people of Fernie honour the Griz with the Griz Days Festival, and as he is so pleased with the proceedings, the Griz continues to cause the bountiful snowfall. The weekend long festival features an array of events, including a parade, family carnival, sporting competitions and various parties.
